I’m talking, partially, about Guy Ritchie’s resurrection of the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. It was the first of our Friday night double feature and turned out to be so much more than I expected. The art direction was stellar and at times gave the film an epic feel with wonderfully massive, moving, panoramic shots of late nineteenth century London at its grittiest.
I had partially given up hope on Ritchie with his recent barrage of meh since Snatch but was pleasantly surprised to see his artistry back in full force. The movie also helped solidify Robert Downy Jr. as on of my all-time, favorite actors. I literally cannot wait for Iron Man 2.
The second movie we saw was Julie & Julia. In Miggy’s basement theater, no less. I always like hanging out there…feels like home. Anyway, Julie & Julia is not a great movie, in my opinion, but it certainly had some charm and wit of its own. (Plus, Colorado native Amy Adams never hurts). Aside from hoping it was about 1/2 hour shorter, I was also hoping the movie would touch on Julia Child’s spy days. Before becoming a famous chef Julia Child worked for the OSS. She helped the U.S. spy agency develop shark repellent, a critical ingredient in protecting explosives used to sink German U-boats during World War II.
